(unofficial) List of wines you need for your blind tasting group.

February 27, 2018 in Sommelier Studies

So you want to start a tasting group or get more structured? Make a list of wines (with producers) that you need to taste. The Court of Master Sommeliers has a list of probable examinable white and red grape varieties. (see links below). The lists can help guide you to the correct regions and styles that are considered 'classic'. Producers are not listed because the Court understands there is a vast array of quality wines out there and do not endorse any particular producers. The Court will never reveal the list of wines at their blind tasting exams, so don't even think these may or may not show up in yours.

In my experience with tasting groups, each member brings a bottle of wine and we sit around tasting blind, without knowing if the quality of the wine is accurate.
I created a list (based on CMS probable varieties) and include the exact producer, wine, vintage, and average retail price.

These wines are not chosen by the Court, they are MY recommendations based on my experience with each wine. You can download the excel file and edit as you like, changing producers and vintages as you taste through.

Hopefully this serves as a guide when you have someone purchasing wines for you that are not familiar with archetypal producers.
