It’s not easy to find great wine maps. I was thinking of Sancerre and was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a full map with soil types, lieux dits and actual borders of the appellation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I took to the GIS again and used French Geological soil resources to create the differences of each terroir.
· Clay and limestone white soils, (terres blanches) situated on the hills of the western part of Sancerre. These are the same soils from Chablis (Kimmeridgian)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
· Pebbly soils, known as caillottes on the flatter valleys, maybe the most classic for white wines
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
· Siliceous-clay (Silex) soils found in the mid slopes on the eastern border, that continue into Pouilly-Fumé
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I noted some classic and favorite producers with help from Google maps.
Francois Cotat, Edmond Vattan, Vincent Pinard, Alphonse Mellot, Paul Thomas, Daniel Chotard, Vacheron. Hopefully, their location can help differentiate the styles too.
