As you know, I love maps. I've been "mapping" out wine regions from the entire world on Google Maps, and recently found pleasure in hand-drawing them. I like the simplicity as well as the detail I can achieve.
I was inspired to make this map while I was perusing The Châteaneuf-du-Pape Wine Book by Harry Karis. The book lists a table with great detail all the different vineyards in the appellation.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the first AOC in all of France, and set forth the requirements for all other appellations. Geography, Grapes, Planting, Pruning, Harvest, Yield, production, etc.
The map of the lieux-dits is important, as in Burgundy, these vineyards date back centuries. The oldest (Bois de la Ville) dates back to 1344, during the pontificate of Pope Clement VI. Many still exist today.
