The region of Rioja is divided in three subregions; Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. The River Ebro snakes through each region as it heads south into the Mediterranean, however the importance of the Ebro extends past its banks.
The tributaries that flow into the Ebro create seven significant valleys, each with its own unique climate, soil and terroir.
